This NFL Top 10 will be based on a bettor’s perspective, rating teams not on their record, but their current strength.
1) NEW YORK GIANTS: Even with four starters sidelined and many others, including Eli Manning, sitting out the second half, the Giants gave the desperate Minnesota Vikings all they could handle before falling on the road 20-19 as Ryan Longwell nailed a clutch 50-yard field goal as time expired. Running back Derrick Ward gained 77 yards on the day, giving New York a pair of 1,000 yard rushers on the year, just the fourth such tandem in NFL history. The Giants have a bye next week.
2) TENNESSEE: Having locked up the AFC’s top seed last week, and with it home field advantage, Titan head coach Jeff Fisher sat eight starters and pulled quarterback Kerry Collins after just one series, in a 23-0 loss to Indianapolis. Tennessee enjoys a bye next week.
3) PITTSBURGH: The Steelers closed out the regular season in fine fashion, crushing the Cleveland Browns 31-0. The Pittsburgh defense limited qb Bruce Gradkowski and wr/qb Joshua Cribbs to a combined 6 of 18 for 26 yards. Ben Roethlisberger sustained a concussion but is expected to be fine. The Steelers have a bye next week.
4) BALTIMORE: Coming off a dismal 5-11 season and entering this year with a new head coach (Jim Harbaugh) and a rookie signal caller (Joe Flacco), the Baltimore Ravens exceeded all expectations, going 11-5 as they closed out the regular season with a dominating 27-7 win over Jacksonville, clinching the AFC’s final wild card berth with the win. Flacco finished the day going 17 of 23 for 297 yards and no picks. The Ravens open the playoffs at Miami next week.
5) NEW ENGLAND: New England defeated Buffalo 13-0 Sunday, their 11th consecutive win over the Bills, but failed to secure a 6th straight post-season berth. The Patirots became the first NFL team with an 11-5 record to miss the playoffs since Denver in 1985.
6) INDIANAPOLIS: The Colts routed Tennessee in a meaningless game for both teams, 23-0, as Peyton Manning reached 4,000 yards passing for the 9th consecutive season and favorite receiver Marvin Harrison passed Cris Carter to became the NFL’s No. 2 all time pass cather. Jim Sorgi replaced Manning in the first quarter and went 22 of 30 for 178 yards. The Colts open the playoffs next week at San Diego .
7) CAROLINA: Lots of stars in Carolina’s 33-31 road win at New Orleans that clinched the NFC South title and the second seed in the conference. Jake Delhomme went 14 of 20 for 250 yards and a score, DeAngelo Williams carried the ball 25 times for 78 yards, setting a franchise-record single season rushing record of 1,515 yards and John Kasay nailed a 42-yard field goal with one second remaining in the game. Last week Kasay missed a 50-yard attempt near the end of regulation that would havve beaten the New York Giants and given the Panthers the NFC’s top seed. Carolina has a bye next week.
8) ATLANTA: The Falcons clinched the NFC’s No. 5 seed with a 31-27 win over St. Louis. Just like Baltimore, the Falcons came into this season off a horrible 2007 campaign (4-12) with a rookie head coach (Mike Smith) and quarterback (Matt Ryan). Falcon running back Michael Turner carried the ball 25 times for 208 yards and a score, outdueling the Rams Steven Jackson who had 161 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Atlanta travels to Arizona next week in a wild card matchup.
9) MIAMI: A year after finishing 1-15, the Dolphins complete a remarkable turnaround by winning the AFC East, defeating the New York Jets on the road, 24-17. Former Jet quarterback Chad Pennington went 22 of 30 for 200 yards and two touchdowns as Miami joined the 1999 Indianapolis Colts as the only teams to make a 10-game improvement from one season to the next! The Dolphins host the Baltimore Ravens in next week’s wild card battle.
10) SAN DIEGO: The Chargers concluded an improbable late season rush by defeating the Denver Broncos 52-21, capturing the AFC West title on the final day. Trailing Denver by three games with three games remaining, San Diego became the first team to win a division at 8-8 since the Cleveland Browns in 1985. LaDainian Tomlinson had his first three-touchdown game of the season and Philip Rivers went 115 of 20 for 207 yards and two scores as the Chargers outgained the Broncos 491-406. San Diego hosts Indianapolis next week.
Just missed: Philadelphia
