Gator Bait

GreyFox starts his SEC breakdown with the Florida Gators

Since Urban Meyer’s arrival, the Gators have compiled a 70-16 record, with a daunting 19-1 home mark. After an opening 8-3 regular season in ’05, Meyer took Ron Zook’s prize recruiting class to a National Title in ’06. Last season ended with a disappointing bowl loss to Michigan, but the Gators are bringing back a Heisman Trophy winner along with 15 potential starters from that squad, and seem to have a favorable schedule.

Sooner Schooner

2008 Oklahoma Sooners
Season Preview:

Courtesy of the GreyFox

Oklahoma is a historic juggernaut from the Big 12. This program needs no introduction to even the most square of college football fans. It harkens memories of teams that went multiple seasons without losing a game. Sooner fans have witnessed seven National Championships, 42 conference championships, 146 All-Americans, four Heisman Trophy Winners and a 47 game unbeaten streak. The program has been home to some of college football’s best coaches and players for decades. Coaching is currently strong for OU, as Bob Stoops stands at the wheelhouse for the boys in Crimson and Cream.

Starting his 11th year, Stoops posts a career record of 97-22 (65-13 Big 12), with a 3-2 record against hated arch rival Texas over the past five campaigns. The biggest hurdle facing this program is escaping its division, and once it does that, it is going to have to find a way to erase the current 1-4 bowl run. Texas and Texas Tech are fielding veteran, tough teams this season, and battling for the Big 12 South is going to bring great bloodshed.

Split decision and Cheers to TAI

We split yesterday winning with the favored Red Sox and losing with the Astros as a huge underdog. The value was there but Backe struggled with control and started leaving the ball up. It was an obvious possibility against a loaded lineup on an offensive day at Wrigley but the play had to be made.

Tuesday’s win with the Rays put us over the $1000 (1078) mark since we started keeping track at Sharpbettor.com. If you have bet $100 on each of my releases that would be your return. Congrats to those who have participated in the winning and jump on board to the rest of you. It’s never too late. (Continued..)

A day off and a look at Georgia

After a brutal Sunday, I wasn’t big on the Monday card so I took the day off. Today, I’m bouncing back with my Black Diamond AL Play of the Week. An important aspect of the recent success has been coming back with a big day after the occasional losing day. Let’s hope that trend continues this evening.

A wise man once said that one of the keys to success is surrounding yourself with people who are smarter than you. As fall approaches, you will see that I leave the college football to a couple of the sharpest men I’ve had the pleasure of meeting since my arrival in Las Vegas.

I don’t have the time or knowledge to do it all. I’m overwhelmed with the NFL, MLB and college basketball. I really don’t understand how any individual can take on much more than that. Historically, I’ve only handicapped the National League in the summer but I have taken on some of the AL responsibilities and it’s been profitable for the bankroll but it’s been my least pleasurable summer in years. All I can say is very few people can come close to understanding the preparation necessary to gain an advantage on a daily basis betting sports. (Continued..)

Back to blogging

Vegas Numbers will return before the start of football season. My audio equiptment needs a tune up so this is going to be a more traditional blog in the mean time.

Sunday was a tough day to say the least. Struggling through an 0-2-1 day just isn’t my style and it’s the latest reminder that my gambling days are numbered. As great as my record has been, losing days sting more than ever now that I sell my picks.

I bet all my releases in Vegas sportsbooks and the loss out of wallet hurts but the agony is now compounded with others on my action. It’s amazing how the winning days come and go but the losing days devastate me to the point of struggling to eat or sleep. It’s a great life but this is no way to live if I want to be an old man someday.

I choose this lifestyle and have been through plenty of ups and downs in my career but I simply can’t handle losing anymore. I put so much of my time and energy into this that I even get frustrated with this nonsense when the results come in as expected but the losing is completely intolerable.

Don’t get me wrong, I not going anywhere imminently. The bankroll is as healthy as ever and it’s only about 100 days until college basketball season. You can find me in the books all over town for at least the next eight months. I’m still finding winners but I’m starting to enjoy it less and I know I can’t produce at this level for too much longer.

I realize that I’m ignoring other interests and the world is changing at an alarming rate. Earning a living betting sports is enjoyable and rewarding but it takes up just about all of my time and energy. Finding pointspread advantages is an academic exercize which is the rare combination of fun and profitable. I will never regret my years in Vegas but the time is coming for my mind to focus on other endeavors.

With that said, my podcast “Vegas Numbers” and blog “My Final Season” can be found here on a consistent basis.

Take Care,

Tommy D.

2008 All-Star Game preview

Major League Baseball’s 79th All-Star Game will be played Tuesday night in Yankee Stadium. The dramatic final season of baseball in “The House that Ruth Built” is highlighted by the biggest game of the summer.

This is the fourth time the Midsummer Classic has been played in the Bronx. Most recently, the National League emerged victorious by a 7-6 score in 1977.

The American League has dominated the game in recent years going 10-0-1 since the NL’s 1996 victory in Philadelphia. The only game the AL did not win in the last 11 years was the infamous tie of 2002 in Milwaukee. Ichiro Suzuki’s two-run inside-the-park homer highlighted last season’s 5-4 win for the AL.

The American League lineup features a mix familiar superstars and fresh faces. Ichiro will once again be leading off, while hometown heroes Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez will start on the left side of the infield and bat second and fourth respectively.

The Texas Rangers provide two first time All-Stars to the starting lineup. Josh Hamilton’s brilliant season has arguably been the biggest story in the first half and he is being rewarded by batting third. Fellow Ranger with a troubled past, Milton Bradley, will DH and bat sixth.

It is a rare occasion for Boston Red Sox players to be cheered in the Bronx, but this will be the case Tuesday night. Boston has three players in the starting lineup. Manny Ramirez will bat fifth and play left field, Kevin Youkilis bats seventh and plays first base and Dustin Pedroia will bat ninth and play second base.

Cleveland Indians left-hander Cliff Lee (12-2, 2.31) will be the AL’s starting pitcher. He is equally effective against hitters from both sides of the plate and possesses excellent control. Lee has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of better than 5-to-1 and has yielded just five home runs in over 124 innings pitched. He pitched six shutout innings against the Rays last Friday and will likely be limited to two innings.

The National League lineup is younger and less experienced but explosive nonetheless. Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez (.311 23 HR, 23 SB) and Phillies second baseman Chase Utley (.291 25 HR, 69 RBI) makeup the top of the order and will set the table for the big boys.

Sluggers Lance Berkman, Albert Pujols, Chipper Jones and Matt Holliday provide punch in the heart of the order. The quartet has combined to hit .352 with 72 homers and 225 RBI through the first half of the season.

Newcomers from the NL Central bat in the seven through nine holes. Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun (.286 23 HR 66 RBI) will be followed by Kosuke Fukudome and Geovany Soto of the Chicago Cubs.

Brewers ace Ben Sheets (10-3, 2.85 ERA) will get the start for the National Leaguers. The right-hander has recorded 108 strikeouts and opposing hitters have just a .229 average against him. He is more difficult to hit under the lights and has slightly better numbers on the road. Sheets has never pitched in Yankee Stadium.

The American League may benefit from an outstanding bullpen if the game is close in the late innings. The AL has six men on the roster with at least 20 saves including the Angels’ Francisco Rodriguez, who leads baseball with 34.

The American League opened and remains a substantial favorite. The AL has dominated Interleague play since its inception, won seven of the last 10 World Series Championships and hasn’t lost an All-Star Game in over a decade.

This trend of dominance results in a -145 on the AL. The ‘total’ is listed at 10.
